TWEET/GAROT WINS BUILD WISCONSIN AWARD FOR PLUMBING

THEDACARE Physicians – Family Medicine – Shawano,WI

ThedaCare Physicians in Shawano, Wisconsin is a new medical clinic facility built in 2006.  The facility is a two story medical building consisting of 70,000 square feet.  The most unique aspect of this project is that it was a fast-track project which needed to be completed in a very short time frame, approximately six months.  Being a medical facility, the complexity of systems and special medical requirements added to the overall challenge to meet the short time frame for completion.  The owner insisted that the project be done on time and complete with no exceptions.

ThedaCare’s vision for the project was to bring additional high tech healthcare services to the rural Shawano area community so that patients would not have to travel out of the area for treatments that were not available locally. The facility includes two surgery suites, an MRI, CT Scan, and other diagnostic specialty equipment areas.  Also, there is an oncology area for cancer treatment.  Extensive medical gas piping was installed throughout this building.

Lean Construction techniques were critical to the success of this project.  The time line would have never been met without using these techniques.  Meeting the time line was critical to the success of this project.  ThedaCare needed to open the facility on time totally complete.   Daily meetings were held to discuss and resolve scheduling issues and conflicts, material delivery schedules and delivery issues, short term planning, and trade coordination. These Lean techniques were also part of the quality control aspect of the project.  Every meeting included a recap of where we were in the construction process and any quality or scheduling issues that surfaced since the last meeting.  Action plans were put in place immediately to resolve any quality or scheduling issues.

Tweet/Garot had daily safety meetings which was critical to the success of the project. We could not afford down time based on the aggressive schedule time line.  There were no recordable injuries during this project.

All of the Plumbing fixtures and assemblies were pre-fabricated in Tweet/Garot’s plumbing fabrication shop.  Everything was assembled in an indoor controlled environment.  All fabrications were labeled and tagged with location, attached hardware, and put on movable transport racks and shipped to the construction site for final installation.  High efficient water heaters and low-flow plumbing fixtures were installed by Tweet/Garot.  5 to 10 percent utility savings are expected to result over standard plumbing equipment.
